Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to your eye’s optic nerve, caused by a buildup of pressure inside the eye. It tends to be inherited, particularly for those of African-American descent.
Visiting your eye doctor for regular eye exams is important, as if glaucoma is not diagnosed and treated; it is possible to experience long-term vision loss. The most common type of glaucoma is called ‘open-angle’ or ‘wide-angle’, and this occurs when the fluid in the eye doesn’t flow properly.
Symptoms
For some people, there are very few symptoms, which can cause it to go unnoticed until late in the disease. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is advised to seek the help of a qualified medical practitioner:
- Seeing halos around lights
- Vision loss
- Redness in the eye
- Eye that looks hazy
- Nausea or vomiting
- Pain in the eye
- Narrowing of vision (tunnel vision)
I have glaucoma. Am I still a candidate for LASIK?
It is highly recommended that you meet with a physician that will be able to evaluate your condition and determine if you are a candidate. Having glaucoma does not automatically mean that vision correction surgery is impossible for you; it simply means that you must be thoroughly screened. If your glaucoma is under control, LASIK can be an option for you. Contact us today or book a free consultation to see if you qualify.
