What’s so great about LASIK anyway? There are many benefits. What is now the most popular eye procedure in the world, it is estimated that over 100,000 people a year undergo the transformative surgery. Though the idea of LASIK may seem scary it is actually considered to be painless and vision is corrected usually the day of the surgery (if not the day after). What’s more is that compared to other surgeries one may undergo in their lifetime, the duration of healing is short and usually no bandages or stitches are required. Another comforting fact is that complications occur is less than 5% of surgeries. Continuous improvement in method and technology have made LASIK more effective and safer every year. You need only glance quickly at articles online to see the odds in favour of LASIK procedures. While dry eyes are the most common side effect in the first few months after the surgery, tear supplements are a cheap and easy fix for this issue. There are two mains types of LASIK eye surgery:
- 1. PRK (photorefractive keratectomy)
Mainly used to correct low prescriptions, PRK is a refractive surgery has been performed since the late 80’s. Though similar to LASIK, PRK differs in that the cornea’s entire epithelial layer is removed to expose the treatment area and therefore does require a slightly longer healing time. This technique is usually used for people whose cornea may be too thin to safely allow for the creation of the corneal flap required for LASIK. So why might you choose PRK over LASIK? Sometimes a patient’s myopia, hypermetropia, or astigmatism might be too severe for standard LASIK thereby making PRK a preferred treatment.
- 2. LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis)
LASIK is the most common of vision correction surgery. LASIK is used for correcting most types of refraction errors though not always the best option for correcting high prescriptions. Instead of removing the cornea’s entire epithelial layer as in PRK, the surgeon will cut across the corneal flap and raise a flap of tissue to effectively reshape the cornea.
