Eye floaters – sounds like a strange term, right? It’s certainly not a topic that we bring up in everyday conversation. The thing is, we have all experienced eye floaters, but most of us don’t know what they are and that there’s a specific name for them.

So, what are eye floaters?

They are the tiny spots and flecks that drift around in your field of vision. No need to worry, though! They are very common and are experienced by everyone at some point.

Shapes of floaters can include:

  • Squiggly lines
  • Black or gray dots
  • Small, thin strands

How do you get them?

The spots occur when tiny pieces of the eye’s vitreous layer break loose within the back portion of the eye. They can take on many different shapes and sizes to become what has been known as “floaters.” They are especially noticeable when you look at something bright.

Would they ever require medical attention?

You should seek the help of an eye doctor if:

  • You notice a sudden increase in the number of floaters
  • The floaters are accompanied by a temporary loss in vision
  • You experience significant flashing lights
  • A dark curtain seems to block part of your vision
  • You develop eye floaters after an eye surgery

Rarely, floaters can be an indication of a more serious eye condition, such as a retinal hole or detachment. If you think you have eye floaters and you possibly experience them too often, contact your eye doctor as soon as possible.
