What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when there is a buildup of protein in the lens, making it cloudy. This can cause loss of vision, as it prevents light from passing through the lens. The most common form of cataracts are age-related, as it can be a part of the normal aging process. However, it is possible for them to form at any age, making it important for you to get regular eye exams in order to detect them early.

I Think I May Have Cataracts. What Are The Symptoms?

Although the development of cataracts is typically a slow process, the symptoms can include:

  • Cloudy, blurry, or foggy vision
  • Changes in the way you see colour
  • Trouble driving at night (i.e. glare from headlights)
  • Sudden changes in prescription
  • Double vision

 What Treatments Are Available?

More than 250,000 cataracts are removed as day surgeries each year in Canada. The surgery involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear, artificial one. Typically, it is minimally-invasive and takes less than one hour.

Am I Still A Candidate For LASIK If I Have Cataracts?

LASIK and cataract surgery are two completely different procedures – LASIK corrects issues such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. It is possible for you to get LASIK if you have cataracts or have had them removed. However, it is important to note that LASIK does not remove cataracts or prevent you from developing them in the future.

In addition to providing advanced LASIK procedures, we also offer Laser Cataract Surgery, a major advancement in the surgical treatment of cataracts. If you are interested in either of these two procedures, contact us today and we’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.
