It all began as a dream. One out of nine Canadians over the age of 65 experiences significant vision loss. As a pioneer in treating retinal diseases, that didn’t sit well with Dr. Fareed Ali. He wanted to make a difference. Dr. Ali has dedicated his life to the development of new treatments to help individuals with severe eye diseases, and in 2006 Dr. Ali was one of the founding members of The ICare Ophthalmic Foundation.
ICare’s mission is to provide funding and financing solutions for patients with certain incurable eye diseases. It also develops treatment options for underprivileged patients through research, and assists with funding for ophthalmic organizations in need.
One of the first tasks undertaken by ICare was donating equipment to certain research studies. Medical equipment is extremely expensive, and yet vital if these studies are to succeed. Since ICare Ophthalmic Foundation is a Canadian organization, it made Canada the main beneficiary of the money raised. In addition, the foundation is responsible for the maintenance of other charitable organizations, like the Toronto Kolkata Foundation.
As time passed, it became clear that ICare could help patients in underprivileged countries in need of ocular health initiatives. Dr. Ali is proud to be part of an organization, which sponsors eye camps to India and aspires to see a world where everyone can enjoy better eye health.
Throughout its eight-year history, ICare Ophthalmic Foundation has continued to develop research for diseases like Diabetic Retinopathy and Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). In particular, the goal here has been to advance research and training, and provide endowments as well as equipment and internships. Dr. Ali’s expertise as a pioneer in the development of micropulse laser technology has improved the safety of patients with dry AMD. These treatment advances are among the most successful therapies used to treat retinal diseases around the world.
Today, ICare has expanded globally to assist international patients with severe eye diseases. The foundation pays for any required lenses and sometimes travel costs to clinics willing to treat these patients free of charge.
The ICare Ophthalmic Foundation accepts donations from individuals and community organizations.
