In honour of August being National Eye Exam Month, we must stress the importance of getting a yearly eye exam. It is just as necessary as going to the doctor and dentist! Regardless of age or health condition, it’s an appointment you should be making at least once a year.

You may think that you have perfect vision, so a visit to the eye doctor is unnecessary. Just because you don’t experience blurriness or any daily vision problems, it doesn’t mean you don’t need an exam.

Eye doctors do so much more than just determine whether you require an eye prescription. They will also check for the presence of eye diseases and evaluate how your eyes work together.

Here are some of the most common eye problems:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration
  • Presbyopia
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure

Another common excuse that people use for not getting a yearly eye exam is that they have had a vision screening. An example? The vision test that’s performed when getting a driver’s license. The problem with vision screenings, however, is that they aren’t as comprehensive as an eye exam. Although these screenings provide a quick measure of your vision, they cannot provide an in-depth examination of your eye health.

Do yourself and your eyes a favour and book yourself an eye appointment today!
